Sarah Tillema
This course provides an interdisciplinary survey of conceptions of gender and sexual ethics throughout Christian history. Students will explore how Christian beliefs, theological debates, and ethical frameworks have shaped-and have been shaped by-understandings of gender roles, sexual morality, and identity. The course spans historical periods from the early and medieval church through contemporary American Christianity, engaging critical themes such as marriage and divorce, queerness, women's participation in church leadership, celibacy, sexual purity, reproductive ethics, and theological responses to sexuality and gender diversity.
